Oak Grove Cemetery Tour
A tour of historic Oak Grove Cemetery is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019. Kay Westberry will again be leading this popular tour which is open to the general public. There is no charge, but donations are accepted and will be used for repairing monuments in need.
Majestic Oak Grove has been an intriguing location since it was created and laid out as part of St. Marys in 1787-88. Approximately 29 soldiers of the American Revolution as well as soldiers from all wars fought by our country lie in peaceful repose under the beautiful live oaks which shade their rest. The City’s ties with the ocean and rivers is obvious from the markers in honor of captains, seamen and fishermen.
Fascinating stories abound. In addition to the tour of the cemetery, St. Marys history will be presented at stops along the way. Reservations may be made by calling 912-882-5301. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name, how many in your party, and a phone number where you can be reached in case the tour has to be rescheduled due to weather conditions. If you decide to attend at the last minute and it’s too late to call, please come anyway.
The tour will last approximately an hour and a half or as long as questions keep coming.
Please park on Weed Street and meet at the main gate there.
